Bad Bunny: A Puerto Rican Gem

Introduction: Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican artist, has obtained a worldwide audience. He achieved fame by writing and performing in Spanish. this made him different from previous artists who transitioned to English to expand their fan base. The three-time Grammy winner is celebrated for hits like "Titi Me Pregunto," "Dakiti," "Moscow Mule," and the chart-topping "I Like It" alongside Cardi B and J Balvin. His 2020 release, "El Último Tour del Mundo," made history as the first all-Spanish language album to top the Billboard 200. Bad Bunny got his start by sharing his music on SoundCloud while attending college. In this playlist we will explore some of his most influential songs and controversial videos that are associated with those songs.

Song 1: Solo de Mi

In the music video for "Solo de Mi," Bad Bunny delivers a potent message against domestic violence. The video poignantly depicts a woman in front of a microphone who, over time, reveals bruises on her face. Ultimately, she reclaims her strength and ends the video triumphantly dancing alongside Bad Bunny. Reading through the English transition of the lyrics you can sense the independence and strength increasing.

Song 2: Caro

Besides highlighting women from various backgrounds, Bad Bunny challenges traditional gender roles, starting the video with a scene of him getting a manicure.  "Men also take care of themselves," he has said in an interview with Refinery29. "There is no need to criticize why one decides to maintain themselves one type of way. Stop the ignorance and let's think with a more open mind." The lyrics however speak to living a lavished lifestyle in adulthood in comparison to growing up, dressing in the finest clothes and drinking the most expensive drinks.

Song 3: Ignorantes feat. Sech

In the video, Bad Bunny and Sech sing to their exes. during the video Buny also showcased a variety of couples representing different races and sexual orientations. Both artists tell different stories. One is saying to his ex, "come back if you want to be happy" while the other is saying what he is feeling and hopes "the puppy scares away your boyfriends".

Song 4: Si Veo a Tu Mama

Bad Bunny highlights mental health issues, beginning the video with a man contemplating suicide. The song delves into the depths of depression, conveying to viewers that embracing one's emotions is acceptable, regardless of gender. The lyrics show just how alot of people feel when their relationships end " I don't know why the hell I fool myself saying I forgot you, when I miss you."

Song 5: Yo Perreo Sola

This might just Bad Bunny's most significant video yet. The video, a visual anthem for female empowerment, features Bad Bunny in drag, challenging traditional gender roles and advocating for the normalization of men embracing their femininity. The title of the song is translated to " I twerk alone", which is a form of dance traditionally done by females. The lyrics speak of the things that are "unbecoming" of a lady, but he used those things to "empower" his female listeners to do what they what regardless of what people may think.

Song 6: I Like It

Originally sung by Pete Rodriguez, Cardi B, featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin another Spanish-speaking artist sampled the original song. The song embraces self-confidence, success and embracing cultural roots. The song highlights the appreciation for the finer things in life and it underscores the significance of maintaining authenticity, even when faced with criticism.
